That Year

One year ago today I woke up in a tiny bedroom in the Dublin flat I was to be sharing for the next three months. It was my first full day overseas, and at 6:00am I found myself jet-lagged, excited, sad, and confused. I sat in bed and watched “Almost Famous.” I don’t know why, but it seemed to fit the moment perfectly, and besides, Cameron Crowe can do no wrong (I can say this because I have yet to see “Elizabethtown.”) Following the movie, I proceeded to close my eyes and go back to sleep for a few more hours.

Fast-forward one year.

This afternoon I woke up with many of the same feelings as I did a year ago. Granted my mind is usually a bit cloudy when I’m on a stretch of night shifts. Today, though, I found myself lying in bed thinking simply, “what a f*%#ing year!” Upheaval, separation, adaptation, reunification, joy mixed with despair, and the tedious process of trying to settle in all over again.

Do we miss Dublin? Certain aspects of it, yes. However, starting over and taking root somewhere isn’t all bad either. My hour-long commute home from work in the morning, though, that’s another story.

As I type: listening to Franz Ferdinand “Live at Brixton”
