Keep Hope Alive

Wow, two weeks can go by pretty fast. Of course we're still here and some of you know that summers are just very busy. I've still been busy with Govies, more camping, more parades, more shows, but I'm not going to focus on that this time. (although the invitation to our show on Aug.19th still stands)

Brandon and I have been very busy getting our lives back in order. We have finally purchased me a new car. I don't have it yet, but will next week. We ordered a 2006 Honda Civic, Black. It was kind of an ordeal to get one and we went through a dealer in Iowa City, because they were willing to find us a car before September. The Civic is a pretty popular car and it is just difficult for dealers to find them. They don't even always have them on lot for you to test drive. However, IC found one and it's actually there right now, but we can't make it down there until August 7th. Our plan right now is to get to IC on August 6th and leave the 8th. Hopefully we'll see some of you around.

Our other big news is that we have officially started our house hunt. We have a realtor and we've driven by some houses (to rule them out) and on Thursday we'll go in a few to see what there is to see. The housing market in the Twin Cities is ridiculous, but we're going into this knowing this is not the "forever home." We want to get into a house again pretty badly though. We miss all of the animals terribly and want to stop being a burden on our friends and family.

Brandon is working nights again so finding time to get everything done has been a little stressful but hopefully by September things will calm down.

Only 33 days until the first tailgate!!

**Ammendment - I did fail to mention that Brandon marched in three parades over the past few weeks. He marched a Euphonium and seemed to really enjoy it. It was nice to see him in a Govie uniform as well. I'm sure he'll tell you more about it later.

Birdland

So Brandon hates you all, that’s why he hasn’t written in a while. Not really, we’ve just both been really busy. He’s working a ton right now trying to get assimilated to his new setting but will be switching to his regular schedule the end of the month.

As for me….wow, what a crazy week to be a Govenaire. In the past 9 days I have been doing something with Govies 8 of them. I have yet to sleep in the apartment for more than 4 days in a row. It all started on July 3rd with a corps business meeting and lovely dinner at Rob & Joe’s (the guys I lived with in 2004), July 4th parade-concert-parade-concert fireworks from the top of Patrick’s (best pub in St. Peter), July 5th sectionals (rehearsal for those not in the know), July 6th sewing flags a good portion of the day (but they’re gorgeous thanks to Norton’s great design), July 7th trip to Hinkley, MN for camping, July 8th parade-concert-rehearsal-concert then fun in downtown Hinkley, July 9th concert-parade in Lakeville, MN (a 2+ hour nap happened when I got home), July 10th show in Stillwater MN, and July 11th rehearsal and show in Mankato, MN. It’s been a little crazy, but we have about a week off now before our next rehearsal. Of course I’ll be practicing everyday between now and then.

I would just like to add that for me, I’m so happy to be back and I love being a Govenaire. I didn’t think I would miss it but the whole corps is made up of such wonderful people that it just feels good to be around them again. I wish all of my former HMBers could experience this type of marching experience and if you ever want to give it a shot, let me know. OH, and as a formal invitation, our home show is August 19th in St. Peter, MN. It would be great to have my own cheering section there so if you want to make a trip up to the Twin Cities to see some awesome performances, please do.

Day Job

As some of you may know, since going to Ireland and the return I have not been working. What some of you may not understand though is that I am currently looking at changing careers. What my future may hold is unknown right now, but I have officially started looking at what my options are. There is a company in Minnesota called PLATO which I have been looking at since March/April. At West Liberty we used their software for our alternative program. It’s basically computer assisted learning and can be used in many ways. Obviously it is a little odd at this point for me looking for a “non-teaching” job, but I am very excited about what I may find out there.

One thought I had today though was this: In today’s society when applying for a job, school, etc., do prospective employers search on a candidate’s name to find out more information? There is already so much information they are not allowed to ask you for in an interview, but what stops them from getting a lot of that information from your personal page, or other’s pages? And how would you know?

It just was something I’ve never had to think about or worry about before. I’m not saying that I’m embarrassed by anything on this page, our family’s look at it after all. I’m just wondering how others feel about this topic.
